Summer is the time of year when air conditioners are placed under the most stress, due to their near-daily use. The more stress you put on an air conditioning system, the more worn out it’s going to become and the more likely it’s going to be to develop problems. That’s why you should be on the lookout for signs that your air conditioner is in need of repairs, so that you can schedule them as soon as possible. Let’s take a look at some common air conditioning problems that you can run into this summer.
Broken Air Handler
Your air conditioner uses a part called the air handler to circulate air around the home during operation. This air handler is placed under a lot of stress during operation, so to help it run more smoothly it’s equipped with a series of oiled bearings. These bearings wear down over time, depending on how often you use the air conditioner. Eventually, the bearings become so worn down that the friction on the air handler motor increases, producing a loud grinding noise during operation. If the bearings are not replaced, the air handler can overheat and burn out.
Frozen Coil
The evaporator coil is the part of the air handler that evaporates refrigerant in order to absorb heat from the surrounding air. The temperature of the air around the evaporator coil is constantly dropping, and condensation forms on the coil itself during operation. If the flow of warm air from the ducts is ever cut off, the condensate on the coil will eventually freeze. While the evaporator coil is iced over, it will be unable to properly siphon heat from your home. This can also cause more serious issues like breakdowns if left alone for too long.
