Winter weather here in the Northeast can be pretty extreme. It is no surprise that homeowners in this part of the country take their heating systems very carefully. While we are definitely not out of the woods quite yet, we are getting closer and closer to the end of the year’s heating season. If you are thinking about replacing your heater once the winter has passed, then you should give some thought to using a hybrid heating system in Celco.
With a hybrid heating system, you reap the benefits of using a heat pump while also enjoying the peace of mind in knowing that you have a gas furnace on deck. Combining heating systems may sound like an odd decision at first, but it can help you out greatly. Let us know if you decide that a hybrid heating system is the way to go.
How Does Hybrid Heating Work?
If you’re wondering how a hybrid heater works, it’s not exactly like a car that combines electricity and natural gas in order to fuel its operation. There is a similar idea here, though, which is why hybrid heating systems are also sometimes called “dual fuel” heating systems. The heat pump uses electricity, and the other half of the system is typically a natural gas furnace.
Both of these systems have their benefits, but no heating system is going to be ideal at all times. For the most part, the heat pump is going to be tasked with heating your home. This is because heat pumps are generally the most efficient means by which to heat one’s home. That’s due to the fact that they don’t generate new heat, but rather transfer existing heat.
This heat is absorbed as refrigerant is evaporated in the outdoor coil. That refrigerant is then compressed, at which point it travels indoors and is condensed, allowing it to shed its heat in order to warm air for distribution throughout the house. In extremely cold temperatures, though, this can prove difficult for the heat pump to do, resulting in increased operating costs. That’s where the gas furnace comes in.
When natural gas is actually more economical than running the heat pump, the furnace will kick in. Once the heat pump is able to take over efficiently again, the system switches back. Essentially, a hybrid heating system ensures that you are always heating your home with the more efficient system.
Benefits of Hybrid Heating
The most obvious benefit of hybrid heating is the fact that you can heat your home very affordably. Plus, you do so with the reliability of a gas furnace at your disposal. While modern heat pumps aren’t at risk of being totally useless when temperatures drop below a certain point, energy efficiency can definitely be compromised.
Why invest in 2 heaters, though? Well, that’s not really what you’re doing with a hybrid heater. Yes, you get 2 heaters — one efficient and reliable in even the coldest weather, the other even more efficient though less so in extreme cold — but also an AC as well! Remember, the heat pump can reverse its operation in order to cool your home during the hottest time of the year.
