What Is Duct Sealing and Why Is It Important?

When you look at your whole home air conditioning system, you can see that there are two separate but equally important aspects to the system: the air conditioner, which generates the cool air, and the ductwork, which delivers the cool air to your living spaces. If either one of these systems is faulty, your air conditioner will not work as optimally as it should. One way to resolve issues of faulty ductwork is to hire the indoor air quality professionals at Celco Heating and Air Conditioning to perform professional duct sealing on your home’s ductwork system.

What Is It?

Duct sealing isn’t about putting a piece of duct tape on a problematic area of your home’s ductwork; it’s much more involved than that (and for the record, you should never use duct tape on your ductwork; it doesn’t work). When a trained professional comes to seal the ducts in your home, he/she will conduct a thorough inspection of your ductwork system to ascertain all of the problem areas. Once this has been done, your technician will apply a fibrous adhesive called mastic to your faulty ductwork. For holes and cracks, a piece of foil or fiberglass tape will be placed on top of the mastic to secure the bond; for broken seals, metal binding is wrapped around the ends of the ductwork and secured with sheet metal nails. Then the mastic is left to cure into a hard seal that will last for the long-term.

What Are the Benefits?

There are a number of benefits to be gained when you hire a trained professional to seal your ductwork:

  • Better energy efficiency
  • Better indoor air quality
  • Extend the life of your ductwork
  • Better comfort
  • Less stress on your HVAC system
