As winter rolls on, the stress on heating systems across the country will continue to increase. The added wear and tear will make it much more likely for problems to develop and damage the system. Since furnace problems are largely progressive, it’s important that you be able to recognize when your furnace is having issues. The faster you can identify a problem with your furnace, the faster you can get it repaired and the more damage you can prevent. Let’s take a look at the signs that your furnace needs repairs.
Short Cycling
One of the most dangerous problems that can afflict your furnace, short cycling is the result of heat becoming trapped in the furnace. Oftentimes, this is the result of the furnace air filter becoming clogged. As the temperature in the furnace gets higher, the limit switch activates and shuts down the system as a safety measure. The limit switch can’t actually deal with the core problem, though. When the furnace turns on again, it will overheat again and be shut down again. This cycle continues indefinitely until the added wear and tear causes parts of the furnace to break down. If your furnace is turning on and off every couple of minutes, call for repairs immediately.
Ignition Failure
Most furnaces are gas-burning systems, which means that most furnaces rely on ignition systems to start. Whether it’s a standing pilot light or an intermittent electrode, these systems are responsible for igniting the flow of natural gas to start the furnace. If this system fails, your furnace will be unable to actually start burning gas to produce heat. So, if your furnace isn’t starting, this might be why. Call for repairs if your furnace won’t start.
