Is Your Water Heater on Its Way Out?

No one likes to turn on their shower only to find, at best, tepid water. This frustration is doubled during the colder months, when you likely wake up early in the morning ready to jump into a warm shower to get you going. However, you can get ahead of this kind of scenario and potentially eliminate it from occurring if you stay aware of the signs that your hot water heater may be on its way out.

Replacing Before Breakdown Is Always Better

It can be hard to know if your hot water heater is on its way out because these appliances are typically tucked away in your home. They aren’t the most attractive and they run autonomously, so there isn’t a need to keep them at the ready. But this doesn’t mean you should stay completely unaware of its operation. Replacing a failing hot water heater while it is still operational is a much better scenario than having to do it because you no longer have hot water. Here are some signs to keep in mind:

  • Is it using a lot of energy? – You expect your hot water heater to use a certain amount of energy each month to operate. If this amount suddenly shoots up when you haven’t made any changes to its operation, i.e., upped the temperature of the water, then it’s time to see if this is something that can be repaired or if it is time to look at a replacement.
  • Is it providing a poor performance? – Do you have hot water one day and cool water the next? You need to be able to rely on your hot water heater for the hot water you need. If your current hot water heater can’t offer this, it may be time to look at a new one.
  • Is it too old? – There can be a level of pride in having a hot water heater that is past its prime, but this is really a hot water heater that can go at any minute. Not sure if your hot water heater is past its prime? Ask an expert.
