When it comes to preparing for the heat of summer, most people know to get their air conditioners professionally checked. Far fewer people, however, pay any attention to their ducts. That ends up costing them quite a bit every summer, both in terms of comfort and efficiency. Read on to find out more about duct sealing, and why you should schedule it this summer.
Duct Leaks
Though they may not look like it, ducts are incredibly vulnerable to leaks. Whether through the slightest mistake during installation, or years of normal use, ducts can develop leaks in multiple places. Though each individual leak is small, they can add up quite quickly. The US Department of Energy has found that the average forced air system loses up to 30% of its total output to duct leaks. So, if you don’t get your ducts sealed at least once every couple of years, you’re probably losing around a third of the total output that you pay for. This forces your system to operate for longer to achieve the same temperature changes, which costs you more money in the long run.
Duct Sealing
The process of duct sealing will differ between professionals, and the type of duct being sealed. However, the usual method is to paint a substance called mastic into the leaks in the duct. Once the mastic dries, it seals the leak while still being flexible enough to move with the ducts. Depending on how severe the leaks are, the mastic will sometimes be supplemented with regulation duct tape.
